COVID-19 & EBC
East Bank Club Is Temporarily Closed.
It has now been more than two months since we closed the Club due to the COVID-19 pandemic. We miss seeing you, and we hope you and your loved ones are staying safe and healthy.
The Current Projected Status of the Club and Sun Deck Reopening
This experience has been challenging for us all, and it is important to remember that we are in this together. As you may know, the City has entered its third phase of recovery, allowing many businesses, including retail outlets, to reopen. Health clubs were not included in this phase, except for very limited uses which we believe are too few to attract enough employees to forego the economic benefits of furlough. Additionally, it would be very expensive to open with all the operating costs required for such limited use. However, on the positive side, we are quite optimistic for the reasons indicated here that we will be able to reopen the Club in June with some modifications of the City and State guidelines.
We will open the Sun Deck as soon as allowed when or after the Club reopens, with physical distancing in place. Our annual landscaping on the Deck is already complete and ready for you, and we look forward to offering outdoor dining from the Sun Deck Cafe and Grill. We expect to be able to use the pools for lap swimming only, with no social gathering at the pools.
How We Are Proceeding with the City and State
More than 2 million Illinoisans rely on their memberships to stay fit and healthy, something that is more important now than ever. Club members like you are not only stewards of health and safety, but ambassadors as well. In short, you care so much about your own health that you make a financial investment in it through your membership dues. We never lose sight of that.
Because club members have a vested financial interest in health and well-being, we believe they will be careful about following physical-distancing and other guidelines put into place in their clubs. Health clubs also have the ability to revoke the memberships of anyone who does not follow those guidelines. We would not be fulfilling our mission if we did not stand by and enforce those guidelines.
We have been working within health-club industry groups hand-in-hand with officials at the City and State to develop plans to reopen health clubs throughout Chicago and Illinois safely. We are very appreciative of the work that the City and State are doing to ensure that businesses of all types reopen safely. Because of the sanitization practices that were already practiced at the Club, we have been at the forefront of guiding health-club discussions, as we believe it is vital that all clubs share the same high-level best practices that we will incorporate.
Our Reopening Plans
The plans we are developing for our Club will exceed the guidelines set by the CDC and should prove to be a standard-bearer across the industry. Fitness is such an important factor for staying healthy, and we want our community of members and staff to feel safe and protected at the Club. We have always prided ourselves on being an oasis from the stresses of the outside world, and this is no different.
We have put together a reopening plan with the highest standards, and we have a task force of managers to adapt our plans as sensible to best serve our community. The details are set forth below.
Cleaning and Disinfection
We have assessed our already robust cleaning and disinfection procedures to ensure a safe environment upon reopening. When we closed, we immediately went to work to deep clean the entire building. Once we reopen, we will be using a new product, called PureSan, to disinfect the Club every night. PureSan is an electrostatic solution that is 100 to 300 times more effective than bleach, yet it is non-toxic, non-irritating and environmentally friendly. This solution can be sprayed in mist form, allowing us to fog every room of the Club each night, completely disinfecting every surface, piece of equipment and touchpoint.
Our housekeeping staff will continue to clean and disinfect throughout the day, and our overnight team will continue their standard cleaning procedures, in addition to the PureSan fogging. Certain areas, including Group Ex studios, will receive additional PureSan fogging treatments during the day. We will also continue to utilize ozone spraying on the Performance Center turf and ozone infusion cleaning for our towels and other laundry.
The Club has always trained our entire team to support our housekeeping team. We will emphasize that with staff-wide training on cleaning procedures and personal hygiene measures. In addition, we have doubled our disinfection supplies for members and staff throughout the Club, including hand-sanitizer stations and spray bottles of PureSan.
HVAC & UV Lighting
We have pressure washed our HVAC system coils and replaced filters to allow for maximum airflow, increasing the overall air exchange throughout the Club. We have also installed UV lighting in select ventilation systems for additional disinfection of the air.
We have installed a thermal-based temperature monitor in the reception area for all members, staff and contractors. Those reading 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or greater will not be permitted to enter the Club.
Members will be required to wear a mask to enter the Club. We will provide members with a complimentary mask while supplies last, and all staff members will receive a complimentary mask.
Signage and floor decals have been placed throughout the Club, and furniture and equipment are being removed or rearranged to ensure proper physical distancing. Arrows will be placed in stairwells and walkways for one-way traffic flows, and elevators will be reserved for those who cannot use the stairs with a two-person capacity limit. Plexiglass sneeze guards have been installed at desk stations where proper physical distancing cannot be maintained.
As we had before being obliged to close, touchless entry will be utilized so that members can scan their own cards upon entry. We will do the same in other areas of the Club, and our new app that is coming soon will allow members to use their phone to check in and for Club purchases.
In addition, we have installed hands-free door openers on all restroom doors, and all other doors will be left open to minimize touchpoints.
Capacity & Phased Reopening
When we reopen, we will do so in phases, with some departments and facilities opening at later dates. We are still determining what those phases will be, and we will follow any and all City and State guidelines as we create our roadmap. This means that not all staff will return on day one, though we expect to bring back our full team as soon as possible.
We will of course follow guidelines from the City to limit capacity at the Club. We are developing a capacity tracker that will be available on our website so that each member can monitor capacity to inform their personal decisions about visiting the Club.
Now more than ever, it is important to stay fit to boost your immunity and relieve anxiety and stress. Since we began our temporary closure, our incredible team of coaches, trainers and instructors have provided us with recorded classes for a Vimeo channel that we set up for this period. In May, we began offering daily live Group Ex classes on Instagram, which we will offer for the remainder of the closure.
When we reopen, we will continue to offer fun and dynamic on-demand workouts from our talented team. In addition, we will stream our Group Ex classes on our website so that all members can join in, at the Club or at home.
We will advise you as soon as the reopening date is set. As has been the case since this began, this is a fluid situation, and we will adapt in order to follow new best practices and to meet and exceed City, State and CDC guidelines.
Meanwhile, we will continue to offer our two temporary freeze options.
Employee Support Temporary Freeze
- $75 per month
- $50 per month will be credited to your account monthly after the Club reopens for each month of dues paid during the closure.
Partner and Family Memberships

Wake Me When This Is Over Temporary Freeze
